Imagine our surprise the other night to find a tiny bat spending the night in our front portico. Tony had to use his super telephoto lense to see him clearly. We haven't seen him since, but Douglas has been on the look-out!

There are many good things to do with Bats, like not let them live in your portico. But another good thing to do is to play catch with them. Seriously.
At my all-time favorite summer camp in B.C., the bats would come out and flap about as they do right around dusk. Because of the way their "vision" works, it turns out they have a hard time telling the difference between a small pebble flying through the air and a tasty bug. So, we would toss a pebble up and some bat would swoop to it, either catch it and drop it or sort of run into it and bump it back down to you.
pretty cool really and no matter how many times they chomped down on a rock instead of a fly, they never once complained. Bats are good sports.
