Today, we chose colors for our home, which Tony and his Dad are painting this week. The house is only 6 years old, but it is showing signs of the weather, particularly the back of the house which gets baked in the sun (you should see our banana tree that is going gangbusters back there). We selected a conservative gray/brown called "Bunglehouse Gray" from Sherwin Williams which should go nice with the river rock trim on the front of the house and a light beige trim to match our almond vinyl windows.
So, here is where I need your help. What color would you recommend for the front door? We've considered deep purple, brick red, and rich pewter blue. I want to do a "deliberate" color that will add some puch (without being garish, of course, or reminding passer-bys of South Beach). Your suggestions are much appreciated and I'll post finished photos. If we pick the exact shade you suggest (of any paint brand), I promise some sort of fabulous prize.

I vote for red - it's supposed to be good luck and red always looks great. Holly
Hmmm...I'd probably go with the blue (a deep red would be good, too). I'd look at my neighbors houses, too. I know that's probably odd, but at our old place, I always like that our house coordinated with the houses on either side. Something about it seemed peaceful.
Douglas told me today that he wanted to paint the house red to match his "Bob the Tomato" shirt. See the photos on the Family Photo Album to see what I mean. Maybe we could do a red door (sans the eyes, nose, and mouth).
I vote for purple - Purple supposed to be the color of royalty, spirituality, passion and love.
What better entrance could you have?
(That, and there are no other words that rhyme with it)
I like red. We have a red front door. Of course with your color, blue sounds good too.
red.
done and done.
The houses on either side of us are off-white with tomato red trim (which is new paint) and the other side is a light mustard yellow with off-white trim (which probably will need to be repainted soon, so not sure how long that will last).
A family across the street just painted their home a bright avocado green with off-white trim. Don't know if we want to coordinate with "The Hulk" house. :) That said, when their house was white, I never noticed how green their yard is and that they had brick trim on their place. It certainly isn't my favorite color, but there are some good things about it. Color is a funny thing.
In honor of my lovely wife and her affinity for the color of royalty, I vote for purple. Not barney purple, but more like rich eggplant. You may want to avoid a red that would connect your house visually with the paint debacle next door and I think for doors, purple is the "new red" like pink was the "new brown" last year for fashion.
Yikes, did I just type that? I still vote for Purple but I'm going go watch a football game, do some grunting and give myself a big shot of testosterone.
If you love color (as I do) and want to experiment a bit, see my posting on my new blog about color.
We decided on a red shade from the same Sherwin Williams Arts & Craft collection. It turned out great! Thanks for everyone's votes!
